February at the App Academy

What’s new at the App Academy at Pasadena High School!

9th Grade

Our freshman class has been moving fast! They kicked off their first year in App Academy by building creative websites using HTML and CSS. Next, they learned how to create 2D graphics and simple animations using SVG. They're now diving into JavaScript and have created their first few interactive websites, such as an online quiz about a topic of their choice and a playable Tic-Tac-Toe game.

10th Grade

The sophomores began the year with a review of JavaScript programming fundamentals. Students used their deepening programming knowledge to create fun and interesting projects. Last semester, the projects they worked on included an interactive 2D animated scene, a simple chatbot, a keyboard-controlled game, and a drawing program! This semester, they’ve explored REST APIs, and they’ve just finished up a Buzzfeed-style personality quiz (if you’ve always wanted to know which Disney princess you are, now you can find out!).

11th Grade

The juniors are on fire! (not literally) The juniors are motoring through java concepts and continue to build the framework for working with Android devices.  This semester, students can choose which Android projects to work on, allowing them to follow the projects most compelling to them.  Most of them have been working on a Tic-tac-toe game and/or a Music Player app, and this week many will start working with libGDX, the software used in making most Android games and animations.

12th Grade

The seniors have submitted their proposals and begun their senior capstone projects.  These projects are original ideas designed by students, and demonstrate the skills they’ve learned over the past three and a half years with the App Academy.  They range from robots to retail websites, 2D and 3D adventure games, and even a light-up prom dress!  Students will document their progress and work on their projects independently for the whole semester, leading up to a showcase presentation of the finished project.
