HOW WILL BUDGET CUTS IMPACT ARTS EDUCATION IN PUSD?
The potential loss of two music teachers will devastate the elementary music program. Up to half of our schools may lose their instrumental programs in the coming school year. This also jeopardizes secondary programs including orchestra, band and jazz ensembles.
Budget cuts will also end the provision of elementary art supplies, elementary choir and visual art coaches who provide instruction and professional development for classroom teachers.
District-wide performance opportunities like the All District Music Festivals and No Boundaries, the all-district art show, as well as museum visits through My Masterpieces will also be impacted.
100% of donations to the Arts & Music fund at PEF will support these equitably distributed, district-wide programs – elementary music, art supplies, coaches, all-district performances and exhibitions, and My Masterpieces.
WHY ARE THE ARTS IMPORTANT?
Arts education fosters critical thinking, innovation and teamwork – skills students need to participate in the workforce. Research shows that students who participate in art and music programs are at least three times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, score higher on SAT and ACT tests, be elected to class office, participate in math and science fairs and win awards for school attendance, poetry or essay writing.
